How The Buteman observed our AGM

This time a more positive message in The Buteman-

The Buteman

AGM completed

The Bute Community Land Company had its AGM at Bute Museum on the 21st June. The minutes will be available online once completed. Meantime there was a demand at the meeting for some further company documents. I have now uploaded the Forest Plan, which is out of date, and will require revision before we can operate the Forest again, and also the Memorandum and Articles of the Company to this page BCLC Information. Please contact me if you want further information.

Bonfire night fire

Who doesnt love a good bonfire?! Next Saturday, 18th June, we will be building a big one at Bute Forest.

We have lot of off-cuts of wood and scrap materials so we thought it was time for a good old fashioned BONFIRE!

Adults are welcome to join us. Bring sturdy footwear and gardening gloves if you have them – this is a DIY bonfire so we need to build it first….

Don’t forget lunch, drinks and midge repellant! Starting at 11am at the Rhubodach work area. Email for more info smile emoticon

Forest foraging!

We have a repeat of last years delicious foraging event tomorrow.

Forage for free food in the forest under the excellent guidance of Mark Williams, from Galloway Wild Foods, and then enjoy a taster of the treats you find (and a few special extras!).

This was a superb event last year and the timing this year means we hope to find an even wider range of foods and include mushrooms amongst our finds.

Mark is a great guide and ensured the group was able to safely identify those foragable foods we find all over our island.

We start at 2pm at the Rhubodach work area -signposted off the road before you reach the ferry. You can park at the ferry, or drive slowly up the track to the second gate.

Call 07896 216 236 if you have any questions or problems.

£5 for adults and free for under 18’s.

Wildflower walk and talk: Sunday 11th May at 2.30pm

Angus Hannah will share his enthusiasm and knowledge on a walk to look at wildflowers, ferns and mosses in the Balnakailly Wood.  The walk starts at 2.30pm from the Rhubodach ferry terminal.  Please email enquiries to

REMINDER: Small mammals survey: Sunday 30th March, 11am – 2pm

A new and exciting feature of the spring programme will be a small mammal survey on Sunday 30th March. The results are of interest and importance as a natural history record for the forest.

The workshop will begin at 11am although traps will have been set up early, just after sunrise (7-7.30am).  The 3/4 hour timescale will increase the chance of trapping being successful.  The traps will be checked together as a group, small mammals collected and traps re-baited.  There will be a break for lunch then all the traps will be checked together again as a group.

Dress warmly, bring waterproof clothing and wear sturdy footwear.   Bring lunch.  Tea and coffee will be provided. There is no guarantee that small mammals will be caught and trapping may be cancelled if the weather is severe.

Please contact Ben Robinson, the Forester, by email or telephone 07707 767178, to reserve your place.

Nest-box building: Saturday 15th March, 10am to 1pm

The spring and summer events programme kicks off this Saturday (15th March) with nest-box building.   Entice your favourite birds to nest in your garden as spring arrives.  The workshop will be held 10am to 1pm at the workshed in Bute Forest.  If the beautiful spring weather doesn’t hold until then, you’ll be kept dry indoors but do wear warm clothes. This workshop is FREE but can only take a maximum of 8.  Children must be accompanied by an adult. You can take your nestbox home with you to decorate.  We’d love you to see your photos.

Please contact Ben Robinson, the forester, to reserve your place. Email  Or call Ben on 07707 767178.
